Small boat paint job.

I really mean small.

Here is the paint job I just started on a set of molds for an RC boat.

Base color is white, the black is the mold where I need to spray some color when the rest is dry.

Here is the deck. When its dry, I will peel the rest of the tape off, and finish the stripes.

Hey, that's pretty neat Coop. :thumb:

What the story?

Are you building this for yourself, or for someone else?

I didn't take pictures of the next step, just of the finished product. I do have a video of painting the two stripes, so when thats ready I'll post a link to it.

Here is the finished paint on the hull.

And the final paint on the deck.

If you look at the picture with the circle, you might be able to see a spot that I'll have to fix later. When I pulled the tape for the orange stripe, a small piece of the white stuck and came up with it.

Heck the whole thing might be crap. You really don't know until you build the part and pull it.

I really wanted the black to have a smoother finish, but my gun wasn't working properly. I wasn't getting enough material through it.

Here is why.

See if you can see orange gel in a couple of the holes. Yes this is set up orange gel coat. The black set up on me too, with the clog I couldn't clean it fast enough to save the gun.

I could clean this all up, but for the price of the gun, I'll just use it for parts.

One of these two colors got ran a little to "hot". Maybe a little less hardener next time.

When you see the gel coat, or resin, start to do this. Pour water over it. AND set it somewhere less flamable than a 5 gallon pail of gel-coat!!!! Yes, I moved it after the pic. But was out of water so I had to improvise. :rof:

That paint gun SUCKED, I already know it failed and I haven't pulled the part yet.

Not enough gel fast enough. I'll show you how it came out later today.

Its scrap, I need to build a new one. I couldn't get enough paint on it with that gun. I really should have brushed some extra on before I laid up the fiberglass, I might have been able to save it.

But take a look. This is a "text book" perfect case of 'gatoring.

If I was to write a book on gel coating, I use this as a picture of a 'gator.

If you look at the glass side of the hull you can see it start. Thats not air. Then in the other pics you can see the result.

It's a shame too, this boat would have looked good.

The color combo does look better than I thought it would.

So these might be the colors I use for the Project X boat.

Thanks for showing the process Coop.

It did look like it was going to be pretty kewl.

You should give it another go. :)

I set the parts out on top of my trash. I bet it was gone in less than an hour.

I'll spray another one up when I'm spraying the big boat. With luck, by the end of May.

Next time, perhaps you should select different music to spray to.

Me thinks that was part of the problem. :p :)
