the price of new boats has gotten terrible. really does make it hard for every day peopel to purchase a new boat.

I wonder how the new emission regulations for the engines play into the pricing?

I gather most of the I/O's now have to be catalyzed to meet the new regs.

I think the engine manufacturers work that out...

I don't think Mercury charges that much more for a new spec drive system compared to a year or so ago. Volvo is usually more expensive but, I'd be willing to bet it is proportional to Merc.
