fuel pump? You may have had debris get inthe pump and damage it. with the choke in you are limiting the amount of air so the air to fuel ratio is close to where with it out it is getting too much air and not enough fuel.
depends on money. the new motors are nice but high dollar. there is still a lot of older mercs out there running strong. and the rebuilt one depends on the rebuild. I am one who enjoys the older stuff so I would go old. some have a lot more character than the new motors.
how old? most of the 70s 80s and early 90s merc where pretty reliable. the reliabilty depends on the rebuild. one part out of tolerance can kill the whole thing.
I would pull it everyday day and flush it. salt water does some mean things to motors. just like buying a car from up north. some may say you should be fine but if it was mine I would pull it.
