What are the Flag Etiquette Basics for Recreational Boaters?

There is some confusion among recreational boaters as to the proper flag etiquette and placement of a flag on a boat. The subject is rarely taught in certified boating courses and the rules are usually passed along one boater to another. What are the rules?

I had a destination wedding to St. Lucia. This is the MAN there. He's funny as hell and sells all kinds of fruit off the boat. That is one rough boat but it still floats. lol
He collects flags from all the tourist and hangs them. If you ever get out there you'll meet him, hes the water MAN. If I look I think I have wedding pics with him in the background. The masts behind him are the pirate ship that runs along there. GOOD Time.

nice article. I think most people just pick a flag that they like. That is why there are so many flags out there today.

Thanks for the compliment Nathan. You mean like the Jolly Roger and Skunk and Martini glass flags?

Keith, if that's the "Water Man" I'll have to feature him in more of my articles..;>) He sells fruit to buy gas for his Evinrude.

Those are some of them. There is also many other different ones like brand flags and just about anything you can think of.

Right N. I've seen them and they're okay, but if they're going to fly an ensign a burgee or a courtesy flag, they should be displayed off the right/correct flagstaff according to Hoyle.
