I seriously doubt Mercury's new 'in-house" inboard engine/drive will reduce costs.

With specialty engines and specialty tools not to mention an overall reduction in R&D outside the company (i.e.> hot rodders) very few crossover parts all adding to a smaller pool controlled by a smaller group this means higher prices. In other words there is no economy of scale in any department.

It had better be a FANTASTIC design to be adopted to many applications or, I think other than new OE applications, people will stick to more commonplace tried and true technology. (automotive motors)
