Impeller direction

Hi everone: I would like to know if it matters which direction that the fins on water pump impeller are curved in when you squeeze them up to stuff them in the cup. I am refering to a 40hp Mercury 4 clyinder. Thanks for any replies.

Yes, The right way is to turn the drive shaft in the direction that the unit turns normaly. This link is not for your engine, But over all it is about the same job for basic info. Just lube up the housing really good. The quickest way to find out what way the unit normaly turns would be to turn the engine over for a second and watch the fly wheel area turn.
