    1971 50HP Evinrude Carburetor Question

I guess you don't have service manual? I wish I knew the answer so I could help. I'll check at my cottage and see if I have a service manual for that year, but I won't be up there for about a week or so. -Chris

    outboard dropped in water...suggestions?

Well if water got into it, you should take it in for service right away to prevent corrosion and damage. For example, if it got into the crankcase you need to get that water out ASAP to prevent rust. What you could try is taking out the spark plugs and turning the motor on it's back, spark...

    1975 to 1990 Johnson outboards,...best years?

There are lots around. You just have to be patient and find a good one at a good price. Have you tried some of your local dealers to see if they've got some good used ones kicking around? -Chris

    Gearbox

Normally the trick is that you have to marry up the cooling lines with one another and you have to seat the driveshaft into the powerhead. I know on my smaller motors, tilting them up a bit and then having a look up the leg with a flashlight gives me a better idea of where I'm aiming to get...

    1975 to 1990 Johnson outboards,...best years?

Well for that era, Johnson or Evinrude, it's pretty much all the same. They were one company, so it's much like deciding between a GMC Pickup or a Chev model - same animal different paint and graphics. If you can, I would try to deal locally. That way if anything goes wrong, you can get help -...

    Car insurance will raise

I know for me when I was young, I was actually listed on the policy but we listed my use as occasional to keep the rates down. Years later the fact that I had been listed on the insurance policy, seem to be a positive for getting better rates as a more active driver, as I had a traceable...

    1975 to 1990 Johnson outboards,...best years?

Personally for me, newer is usually better, or at least better running. I think the biggest improvements in technology from the early to mid 70's to the 90's models related to the ignition systems. The 70's era brought on the change to electronic ignition systems and the move away from points...

    Gearbox

Hi lilaussie, What kind of motor is it? Size, year etc.? Outboard I assume? I gather by gearbox you mean the lower unit? Assuming that's what you mean, on many motors there is a rubber grommet up near the powerhead that slides over the water pump cooling tube, perhaps you're not hitting...
