So I'm sure you have had this question a million times and maybe you can just suggest a thread to read up on the subject but I need the honest opinion of an experienced boat owner. I have been thinking as of late that I am a single guy who needs to get out and explore the world. I would like to do this exploring aboard a boat, and likely in the florida keys and surrounding areas for 6 to 8 months. I am thinking if I start saving my money now I can do this on about a 10k budget including boat purchase. I would like to spend about 3k on the boat. Nothing to special. Just dependable. Looks are second. I have some time on motor boats and i'm very familiar with small oar craft. But I have never put up a sale and know what a jib is only because of movies.. No wait i'm not actually sure where/what the jib is >.<
Anyway. Am I crazy? Should I be more realistic and make plans to do something else? I just love the idea of learning to sail and heading off for some remote islands, hanging out snorkeling and catching my food.Getting tan and meeting some nice ladies for evening drinks. I would travel light and leave the world behind for awhile. And maybe learn to S.C.U.B.A first. We have a dive training center here in the mountains if you can believe that one. Or do you think I would more likely end up spending a nice weekend getting ready to sail off only to flip it and end up shark food? I would of course take some lessons before I left, but would it be enough?
I have been looking into it more and there is a lake sailing school here in Co that offers the prep course for the Basic keel boat course. But I would want to learn off shore stuff too.
Maybe I could plan to live in the area I buy the boat in for a few months and take on further instruction.
Thanks for reading. And thanks for any advise.
