2003 Volvo/Penta water leak

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share a little story basically...

Customer says "Noisy metal grinding sound at drive, and warning buzzer, also noticed a water leak at bottom front of engine."

Metal grinding sound at outdrive (Gimble Bearing) Torn or Worn areas allowed water in the larger Bellow connected to the bearing and caused it to wear pre-maturely. (This was repaired successfully):D

The fresh water pump assembly has a leak at the weep hole; after tear down inspection the impeller, the O-ring and small seal were not only inspected, but replaced even though they appeared to be just fine (customer admits changing these parts, less the small seal already) Upon assembly of the new parts the test run revealed not much of a change  still has leak.

Removal again for a closer look, looks fine. I did notice with the use of my handy pen-light and a good inspection mirror; that the mechanical seal at the back side of the pump appeared to have backed out, but I couldn't be sure. Anyways, at higher RPM's the leak would stop and the temp. gauge didn't go above 170, so I guess it will be fine... a new pump assembly was quoted around $350.00. The customer says he will hope for the best and watch his gauge and listen for buzzer.

What do you guys think???

To stop that water leak your going to need to order and install a new Raw Water Pump / Serpentine Pully Assy.

See number one in this link.

Or here is an example also.

These are only for an example, You would need to find his by using his engine model numbers and letters.;)

Your right, the seal on the back side is more than likely failing.

What size engine does he have? Carbed or EFI? Do you have a scan tool if EFI?

Why did the warning horn go off? I might have a good guess.:D

Hey thanks for the reply,
It is good to have someone share an interest, the Boat is back in the customer's possession; after spending a little over $500.00 he was done, he developed clinched fists!
Thanks for the links, that is exactly what was going to be replaced next.

It had the 3.0 GSM-B with the SX-M outdrive 1.97 gear ratio, it was carbed, and no I don't have a scan tool for EFI, I wasn't aware I needed one until that time comes.

Customer said the horn was going off when he was on the lake, I never took it to the lake; it sounded when key was first turned on, but I never heard it after that.

Thanks again, every time I come here I seem to learn something new.
Awesome place.
